9 Tips For Better Homeowner Insurance
Homes in Houston Texas
1. Learn how the claims process works. Ask your home insurance agent to explain your policy’s claims process to you in detail. Be sure to ask about the filing process, as well as the way you will receive payment.
2. Take a detailed inventory of your assets. Before you can file a claim, you must be able to prove that you owned the assets in question. To make this easier, take the time to go through your home with a video camera. Alternatively, you can also make a list of your items and take pictures of each item for reference.
3. Investigate condo or co-op insurance. If you own a condo, the association probably has a policy that covers the common areas, but you’ll need to purchase your own policy to cover your part of the building and its contents. Ask for a copy of the association’s policy so you can be sure everything is covered.
4. Monitor inflation. The cost to replace your house may not be the same as it was when you first purchased your home insurance policy, especially if it’s been a few years since the initial purchase. Evaluate your coverage limits on an annual basis to make sure you are keeping up with inflation.
5. Consider purchasing “endorsements” or “floaters.” Your homeowners insurance policy may limit the amount of money you can collect for losses involving certain expensive assets, such as fine jewelry. Be aware of these limits and consider purchasing an endorsement or floater to cover any expensive assets you own.
6. Purchase earthquake and/or flood insurance if necessary. Homeowners insurance policies don’t usually cover floods or earthquakes. If you live in an area prone to either type of disaster, consider purchasing earthquake and/or flood insurance to protect your property.
7. Update your coverage after important life events. After any important life event, such as a marriage or divorce, contact your insurance agent to find out whether you need to make changes to your coverage.
8. Purchase an umbrella policy. If you have valuable assets to protect, your home insurance liability limit may not be high enough. Consider adding extra coverage by purchasing an umbrella insurance policy.
9. Select an independent insurance agent. To make sure you have access to all of the best policies with the lowest prices, you should work with an independent insurance agent. An independent agent can match you with the policy that meets your needs.
